Plans and Pricing
Plans
ASPCA offers two main pet insurance options for cats and dogs: an accident-only policy and an accident and illness policy. The accident-only plan covers injuries such as bites and trauma, while the comprehensive accident and illness plan includes those and coverage for common health conditions.
For horse owners, ASPCA provides two plans:
- Colic + Accidents: Coverage for abdominal issues and accident-related injuries.
- Colic + Accidents + Illnesses: Broader coverage including diseases like cancer and hereditary conditions.
All plans can be enhanced with wellness riders, adding preventive care benefits tailored to your pet’s needs, with coverage limits varying by animal type.
Pricing
ASPCA’s premiums are generally affordable, often lower than many competitors. However, their plans feature lower annual limits—starting from $3,000 for basic policies up to $10,000 for higher-tier plans—making them suitable for pet owners seeking essential coverage.
Waiting Periods
They have a two-week waiting period for both accidents and illnesses, slightly longer than some competitors that often have just a few days for accidents but longer periods for illnesses. This relatively shorter waiting time benefits pet owners, especially those concerned about orthopedic injuries.
Exclusions and Coverage Limits
- Exclusions: Pre-existing conditions are not covered, including any illnesses or injuries that occur during the waiting period. Additional exclusions include organ transplants, non-veterinary procedures, and cosmetic surgeries for cats and dogs. For horses, exclusions also encompass alternative therapies, hoof trimming, and arthritis treatments.
- Coverage Limits: Limits are modest compared to other providers, starting at $3,000 annually and reaching up to $7,000 for horses and $10,000 for cats and dogs. Unlimited coverage options are not available, which may be a consideration for owners wanting more extensive protection.
Claims and Customer Service
ASPCA offers multiple claim submission options:
- Electronic claims via their mobile app or website
- Downloadable claim forms for email, fax, or mail submission
- Online claim tracking through their system or app
Customer support is accessible through phone during business hours, email, or via a contact form within the My Pet Insurance app.
ASPCA vs. Market Competitors
- VS. Trupanion: ASPCA has more longstanding experience (since 1997 vs. Trupanion’s 2008). Notably, ASPCA covers veterinary exam fees, unlike Trupanion. The ASPCA also has a shorter 14-day waiting period for illnesses and offers optional preventive care add-ons, which Trupanion lacks.
- VS. Figo: Established in 1997, ASPCA offers reliable coverage with wellness options. However, Figo, launched in 2015, provides 100% reimbursement and faster claim resolution (7-10 days vs. ASPCA’s 2-4 weeks). Figo also features 24/7 live chat with vets, adding a level of convenience and real-time support.
